Can you use a chemical exfoliant every day?
Usually not daily. Daily leave-on AHAs, BHAs, or retinoids outpace the skin’s renewal rate and cause cumulative irritation. Start at 2–3 times a week; most skin types do best at 3–4 times a week maximum.
Why
Chemical exfoliants accelerate cell shedding. Daily leave-on use of AHAs, BHAs, or retinoids outpaces the skin's natural regeneration rate, causing cumulative irritation, reactive oiliness, or barrier breakdown over time.
What to do
Start exfoliants at 2–3 times per week. Only increase frequency if your skin consistently shows no irritation over several weeks. Most skin types do best at 3–4x per week maximum.
Good to know
Low-% lactic acid (≤5%) or gluconolactone (PHA) in a hydrating serum may be tolerated daily by some skin types. This warning applies primarily to active-concentration leave-on exfoliants (glycolic ≥5%, salicylic ≥1%, retinoids).
