Do you apply ceramides before or after serums?
Apply ceramides last, after your water-based serums. Ceramides form an occlusive film, so putting them first physically blocks water-based actives from absorbing. Water-based serums and actives go on first; a ceramide moisturiser seals everything in.
Why
Ceramides are lipids — they form an occlusive layer that mimics the skin's natural barrier. Applied before a water-based serum or active, they create a semi-occlusive film that physically blocks subsequent water-soluble ingredients from penetrating. The actives sit on top of the ceramide layer instead of reaching the skin.
What to do
Apply water-based serums and actives first on clean skin. Ceramide moisturiser or barrier cream goes last — its job is to seal everything in, not to go underneath.
Good to know
This is a layering order error, not a chemical conflict. The ceramide itself is not damaged — it just prevents the actives from working. The most common real-world version of this mistake: applying a ceramide-rich moisturiser, then layering a niacinamide or peptide serum on top. Products go thinnest-to-thickest, water-to-oil.
