Can you use multiple strong actives in the same routine?

Use with care Routine & layering Severity: Medium
Quick answer

Avoid stacking three or more actives in one session. Skin has a ceiling for how much it can respond to and repair — beyond it you add irritation without added benefit. Assign actives to slots instead, such as vitamin C in the AM and a retinoid in the PM.

Why

Using 3 or more active ingredients in a single session (retinoid + AHA + vitamin C, for example) does not improve results proportionally. The skin's ability to respond to and repair after actives has a ceiling — beyond it, you're adding irritation without adding benefit.

What to do

Audit your routine: assign actives to slots (e.g. vitamin C AM / retinoid PM) rather than stacking them in a single session. A simple routine with 1–2 actives per session performed consistently outperforms a complex one performed sporadically.

Example routine

am: vitamin_c,spf
pm night 1: retinoid
pm night 2: aha_or_bha
pm night 3: moisturiser_only
