Can you apply moisturiser or serum over sunscreen?

Use with care Sun protection Severity: High
Quick answer

No — nothing but makeup should go over sunscreen. Layering moisturiser, serum, or oil on top disrupts the UV filter film and lowers real SPF. Sunscreen is always the final skincare step in the morning; let it set for 1–2 minutes before makeup.

Why

Sunscreen works by forming a continuous, even film across the skin surface. Chemical filters (avobenzone, octinoxate) require direct contact with the skin to absorb UV. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) reflect UV from the surface layer. Applying a moisturiser, serum, face oil, or any other product over sunscreen physically disrupts this film — creating thin spots, diluting filter concentration, and significantly reducing measured SPF.

What to do

Sunscreen is always the final skincare step in the AM routine. Nothing goes on top except makeup. Apply it last and let it set for 1–2 minutes before makeup application.

Good to know

SPF-moisturiser hybrids (products marketed as 'moisturiser with SPF') apply the same way — last step. Layering a separate moisturiser on top of an SPF hybrid also breaks the filter film. The FDA SPF test method measures SPF on bare skin — any dilution from over-layering is not captured in the label SPF number.
