Do you need to reapply sunscreen during the day?
Yes — reapply during prolonged sun exposure. One morning application is not all-day protection: chemical filters degrade in UV and mineral filters rub off with sweat and touch. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating.
Why
Chemical UV filters (avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate) degrade with UV exposure — they are consumed by the same radiation they are protecting against. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are more photostable but can be physically removed by sweat, sebum, and touch. A single morning application of SPF provides adequate protection for limited indoor exposure. For outdoor activity of 2+ hours, UV protection diminishes significantly without reapplication.
What to do
Reapply SPF every 2 hours during outdoor exposure. After swimming or sweating heavily, reapply immediately. SPF 50 applied once does not provide SPF 50 protection for 8 hours — the number indicates intensity of protection, not duration.
Good to know
This is a behaviour warning that surfaces when a user has only one SPF application logged in an AM routine but also logs outdoor activity. The FDA requires water-resistant SPF labelling to specify 40 or 80 minutes of protection during water activity — this reflects the same degradation principle. No SPF is time-unlimited.
